Considered and reasonable response.

I like the idea of being pro-active to find a solution and then isolating Libertas and Coir.

Any new treaty protocols/changes etc of course would mean all other states re-ratifying the treaty, which they may not wish to do.

We are in very uncertain times.

Aidan, I admit I'm not an expert on these matters. But would protocols entail a wholesale revisiting of the Treaty by all parliaments (at least those who have passed it all already)? After Nice I, protocols were put in place and the second referendum was held only a few months later. I can't recall if this procedure was particularly onerous on the other member-states. But it was expidited in fairly quick time.

Michael, I feel that this is in keeping with the post-match tone of making the best of things (even in the few points you make re: difficulties with the treaty you have qualifications) (in the scheme of things - this was a terrible decision).

It is, of course, extremely democratic to acknowledge the concerns of the majority of the electorate. However, I take it that we in Labour feel that the majority gets it wrong at election time, all the time, and I feel that there is a strong connection to this result in the reaons why that 'wrong' is continuously the result from our viewpoint.

This country voted strongly in favour of all things European while it thought it could gain, and now that it feels it can make do itself and that we are being asked to do things e.g. accept people from eastern europe right's to live and work here and so on, out rears that particluarly ugly head of the Irish political system.
'What I can get out of it' is all that counts.
'I don't have time for this idealogical crack and certainly not to understand concepts like sharing, common cause etc.'

This is descended from gombeenism, is omnipresent is large tracts of Ireland and is not held to be a problem by many who subscribe.
It is also the FF way of doing things, and is one of the reasons they are as successful as they are. Wheteher it was FF or the historical makeup of electorate that leads to this self-serving element is a 'chicken and egg' arguement at this stage.
It is unfortunate, but must be accepted that this was the driving force for a large portion of the no's
