Hi Michael,

Would you have the reference for where I can find the very interesting data on the number of people receiving housing benefit over the years and also for the stats on % of single people in receipt of different benefits - (I couldn't see it in the welfare.ie report you linked to, but then I have to admit I didn't read it end to end).
Thanks in advance

Michael Taft

Pavement Trauma - in the Social Affairs Statistical Report (2008 is the latest but I'll use the 2007 report that I reference in the post) go to the Supplementary Welfare section (on page 80). They list a number of payments in this section, in addition to Rent Supplement.

There is further information on more special programmes in the following section (Miscellaneous Payments and Grants)- most of them dealing with payments targeted at the elderly (free electricity, etc.).

Get back to me if you want to find more info.

Thanks Michael. The link in the post is actually to a DoSW strategy report, not the statistical report - so you might want to change it - I don't think you would want to have directing people to read DoSW strategy reports on your conscience.

I have to say I remain to be convinced by either side on this. What I like about both your and Constantin's approach is that while the two of you are obviously coming from very different perspectives, you both argue based on data.

Thanks for that, Pavement Trauma - no, I wouldn't want people to read Government strategy reports. There's enough pain in our lives.

The OECD goes to some length to explain the difficulties in comparing such benefits.
