make do and mend

Depressing reading, Mr. Taft. Very despressing.

You ask the million Euro question - Have we learned nothing?

Yes we have. We learned that we liked the Celtic Tiger years and we want them back. I suppose it's like someone who falls ill. One's only desire is to return to health; to normalcy. It doesn't seem to dawn on most people, especially those in positions of power, that we had a life threatening pathology that we've failed to diagnose properly. The disease is latent and apparently endemic in a large cohort of the Irish population.

It seems until fatalities in certain populations occur, the disease will reappear and run its course in due time.

Oh well.

Kieran Sullivan

"Have we learned anything?"

Well, to quote Tonto's question to the Lone Ranger: 'What's this "we" business paleface?'

I suppose the "we" refers to those who voted for more of the same in last year's General Election. That particular "we" has probably learned something alright, but they quickly unlearned it again - like a 15-year-old who drinks six cans of beer on a Saturday night, wonders why he feels sick Sunday morning, and then Sunday night looks forward to doing the same again the following Saturday night.

The collective Irish "we" is still at an adolescent stage of development. It will take generations before "we" make the connection between voting for the "same again" and loading our children onto emigrant ships/planes.
