Listed below are links to weblogs that reference The Claim of €600 Million in Social Welfare Fraud is STILL a Fraudulent Claim:

How many people have to write letters to Joan Burton letting her know that in Galway (maybe other counties too but i don't know) the landlords refuse to drop the rent but are more then willing to lye on the rent forms in order for their tenants to receive rent allowance and still pay the extra chuck ontop. Myself and my housemate found ourselves living outside the city centre in one of the cheapest apartments (2bed.€650p/m) we could not apply for rent allowance as the CWO told us we were paying too much rent. we approached our landlord (a letting agency) to see if they could drop the rent in accordance with the current economic downturn. she told us no way but will write the max amount allowed to receive the rent allowance on the form so we can get more money (which we are not entitled to due to cost of the rent) from the social welfare and expected to pay the extra out of our own pockets. They have a sheet of paper behind the reception desk highlighting the max amount allowed to write on these forms. I was shocked that they can get away with this fraud!! We figured maybe it was only this particular agency so went searching for more properties, as we wrote a letter to Joan explaining what was going on - her response 'move elsewhere there are plenty of accommodation within the means of social welfare recipients to be eligible for the rent supplement'. Our search was unsuccessful we found that where we were living was actually the cheapest - unless wanted to move into a house that should be condemned due to health and safety issues. Every landlord / agency we approached about the price told us ' don't worry we'll fill out the rent form for you so that you will be entitled to rent allowance, but we are not dropping the price' we have spent the last 2years paying for rent beyond our means and according to department of social protection themselves we are now living under the poverty line. I'm so glad I worked so hard my whole live, 9-5, mon-fri, very few holidays, paid all my tax (and never claimed it back) but yes I deserve to be left under the property line being ignored by ministers to help me especially when I am letting them know about a serious fraud going on in galway for at least the past 2+years.

Michael,

Clearly you didn't get the memo about the number of lone parent allowance recipients who also happen to be claiming tax relief on a joint mortgage?

Outright fraud (on two counts) or a control saving?

"Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not"

@tellitlikeitis

It's all about those lone parents, isn't it?

Michael Taft

tellsitlikeitis - could you send me a link to that memo? Thanks.

Kieran,

Willie Sutton robbed banks because that's where the money is.

Similarly, when discussing social welfare fraud it only makes sense to talk about the claimants who defraud the state.

Nothing but a Google search at that link, I'm afraid. The closest thing then is a link to a Irish Indo article from 6-DEC-2011:

http://www.independent.ie/national-news/mortgage-relief-records-will-be-used-to-catch-welfare-frauds-2954552.html

...which includes the following statement, "The Revenue said results from the investigation into joint mortgages were not yet available but said that "appropriate action" would be taken where required."
