And don't forget that CB is no longer available for kids over 18 who are in full time education. So the cost of third-level has also gone up by 1680eur per annum.

Well I am very surprised to hear an economist argue for structuring a subsidy in such a way as to flout some pretty basic economic principles.

There was never any kind of objective economic justification for ramping up the child benefit payable for the second, third and subsequent children.

Quite the opposite in fact. There are significant economies of scale within a multi-child family so that the marginal cost per child tends to decrease, certainly within the range of family sizes seen in post-Catholic Ireland. Between hand-me-downs of clothes, baby equipment, school books, etc; shared accommodation, energy, utilities & transport costs; family discounts on childcare fees & holidays etc, adding a child to a 2-3 child family involves significantly less cost than that incurred for the first child.

If anything, child benefit levels should be re-organized to reflect this reality by tailing off the amount per child as the family size grows and instead bumping up the level paid for the first child.
